Flying Kentucky, June 7, 2012

It was a great weather day in Kentucky so we got the Luscombe L8E out of the hangar and took to the skies. Flying a small plane like this “low and slow” is a completely different experience than riding in a jet airliner. You feel every little gust of air and the whole sky is just right there at your fingertips.

We took off from KLOU Bowman Field in Louisville. "Clear"

This is the beginning of our approach into Dwayne’s farm. Can you pick out the runway?

Clearer now?

Dwayne restores airplanes. Behind this Cessna 175 are two Aeronica Champs and the carcass of a Cessna 120. Dwayne is a UPS aircraft mechanic and it took him three years to get the Cessna 175 from a bare metal bucket of bolts to the beauty you see now.

Time to go.

We decided to try to find Taylorsville Lake just by dead reckoning. Although we had a Garmin, we thought it would be more fun to hunt for it. We found it and went in low just to bug the fishermen.

The sun was going down and the Luscombe doesn’t have instrument lights, so it was time to head for home.

Landing at KLOU. Great, fun day.

The Dream of Flight, 8-18-2011

My friend, David, took me flying in his Luscombe L8E and Col. Joe’s Piper Cub J3. I have wanted to do this my whole life. Here are the photos: (Click on picture for larger view)

Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville, Kentucky

The Muhammad Ali Center is a monument to and celebration of Louisville’s most famous citizen. There isn’t much that can be said about the great Ali that hasn’t already been said. The center is not as well known as its illustrious namesake, but it’s a treasure in its own right. Architecturally, it is one of the most interesting buildings I have visited in a very long time. The design and decor immediately draws you in to the dynamic story of the Great One’s life and meaning. It is full of multimedia presentations of Ali’s life and times. Everywhere you turn, there are delights for the eyes and senses. Yet, the Ali Center is not just a museum. It has several banquet and meeting halls, with all of the supporting facilities, making it a terrific venue for conferences and meetings. It is a very cool place. I am sure that the Great One digs it. I was there to photograph a business meeting, and it was hard to concentrate on the task at hand because, once I got there, all I wanted to do was to photograph the extraordinary building. I’ll go back again when I can spend the whole afternoon prowling around the center and watching the videos.

Cooling Off in Waterfront Park

There’s a park on the waterfront in Louisville, creatively named “Waterfront Park.” Through the park runs a long fountain and wading pool that was put together with an artistic eye. Part of the fountain runs underneath a section of Interstate 64 so that you get not only the cooling water, but also shade. We went down there today and there seemed to be a picture everywhere the camera was aimed. (Click on images for a larger view.)
